A first dedicated heart valve unit: safe and streamlined patient care for the rapidly growing field of transcatheter heart valve interventions
2021
Abstract Background A dedicated Heart Valve Unit was launched in 2018 to meet the demands of the growing transcatheter heart valve program by optimizing patient care in a single dedicated unit. Purpose To assess the performance of the heart valve unit (all steps of patient care in a single unit with intermediate care facilities) over a conventional approach (preparation on a normal ward, postprocedural intensive care unit (ICU) monitoring and transfer to an additional monitoring ward before discharge) in a high volume center. Methods Retrospective analysis including patients undergoing transcatheter mitral or tricuspid valve repair who were admitted to the Heart Valve Unit (02/2018–01/2020)…
Knowledge, attitudes and self-reported practices of food service staff in nursing homes and long-term care facilities
2010
The aim of this study was to investigate knowledge, attitudes and practices of food service staff in nursing homes and long-term care facilities for the elderly in Sicily, Italy. Association with some demographic and work-related variables was also investigated. This survey provides information and outlines many complex questions concerning the basics of food hygiene. Education level, length of service in the employment and attending courses on food hygiene influenced the knowledge, attitudes and practices of food service staff. This study has evidenced the need for continuous training among food service staff regarding food safety in LTCF and nursing homes.
Outcome comparison of integrated psycho‐oncological care versus unstructured care—Results of a non‐randomised open‐label two‐arm trial
2019
Objective To compare patients' experiences with a systematic, integrated psycho-oncological care (IC) model to experiences with "care as usual" (CAU). Methods To improve patients' knowledge about psychosocial support options and to facilitate use, an IC model was developed by psycho-oncologists and a health insurance company and implemented in one German cancer care facility. Using a parallel, non-randomised design, these patients' experiences were compared to CAU patients. In 2015, both patient groups received questionnaires 6-12 months post-inpatient treatment. Main outcomes were awareness, use and opinion of psycho-oncological care (PC) and anxiety level (Generalized Anxiety Disorder Sca…
Multidimensional Prognostic Index and Mortality in Intermediate Care Facilities: A Retrospective Study.
2021
Multidimensional prognostic index (MPI) is a frailty assessment tool used for stratifying prognosis in older hospitalized people, but data regarding older people admitted to intermediate care facilities (ICFs) are missing. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether MPI can predict mortality in older patients admitted to the ICFs. MPI was calculated using different domains explored by a standard comprehensive geriatric assessment and categorized into tertiles (MPI-1 ≤ 0.20, MPI-2 0.20–0.34, MPI-3 >
Health and Demographic Characteristics of Patients Attending a Newly-Opened Medical Facility in a Remote Amazonian Community: A Descriptive Study
2018
Peru is a country with wide regional disparities in health. Remote Amazonian communities have high rates of poverty and poor access to health services. There is a lack of data on morbidity and use of health services in the region. We describe a descriptive, cross-sectional study of the demographic characteristics and presenting complaints of attendees to a newly-opened primary care facility in a remote community. This was supplemented by structured interviews of adult attendees to build a picture of sociocultural determinants of health locally, including engagement with traditional forms of medicine. Our study provides novel insights into an under-studied and under-resourced area. We found …
Nursing staff interactions during the older residents' transition into long-term care facility in a nursing home in rural Norway: an ethnographic stu…
2015
Background: Future challenges in many countries are the recruitment of competent staff in long-term care facilities, and the use of unlicensed staff. Our study describes and explores staff interactions in a long-term care facility, which may facilitate or impede healthy transition processes for older residents in transition. Methods: An ethnographic study based on fieldwork following ten older residents admission day and their initial week in the long-term care facility, seventeen individual semi-structured interviews with different nursing staff categories and the leader of the institution, and reading of relevant documents. Results: The interaction among all staff categories influenced th…
Model wielowymiarowej profilaktyki pozytywnej w teorii i praktyce pedagogicznej
2019
Artykuł opisuje teoretyczne oraz empiryczne założenia autorskiego modelu wielowymiarowej profilaktyki pozytywnej. Ponadto prezentuje sposób jego urzeczywistnienia w praktyce pedagogicznej, przedstawiając strukturę autorskiego programu profilaktycznego Wsparcie wielowymiarowego rozwoju młodzieży, zrealizowanego wśród wychowanków Domu Dziecka w Chmielowicach. Teoretyczne podstawy modelu odnoszą się do teorii głównych i teorii szczegółowych. Natomiast założenia empiryczne sprowadzają się do metodyki konstruowania programów profilaktycznych, a więc kryteriów doboru i metod oddziaływań profilaktycznych, uczestników oraz strategii ewaluacyjnej. Model wielowymiarowej profilaktyki pozytywnej w prak…
